Open Science Policy

1. General Principles

The Engineering and Science (E&S) Journal fully adopts Open Science principles as a core component of its editorial policy, promoting transparency, accessibility, reproducibility, and integrity in scientific communication.

This policy is aligned with recommendations from the SciELO, CAPES, and international organizations such as the UNESCO.


2. Open Access and Licensing

The journal operates under a Gold Open Access model, ensuring immediate, free, and unrestricted access to all published content.

All articles are published under a Creative Commons license, preferably CC BY 4.0, allowing sharing and reuse with proper attribution.

No embargo period applies.


3. Compliance with SciELO Criteria

In accordance with SciELO standards, the journal adopts:

  • Assignment of Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) to all articles

  • Structured and interoperable metadata

  • Mandatory English abstracts

  • Encouragement of full-text publication in English


4. Research Data and FAIR Principles

The journal recomends that research data comply with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).

Authors must:

  • Deposit datasets in trusted repositories such as Zenodo, Figshare, or Dryad

  • Include a mandatory “Data Availability Statement”

  • Provide persistent identifiers (e.g., DOI) for datasets

Exceptions must be justified (e.g., confidentiality, legal or ethical restrictions).


5. Preprints

The journal allows and encourages submission of manuscripts previously deposited in preprint servers such as:

Authors must inform the preprint DOI during submission.

Preprints are not considered prior publication.


6. Peer Review Process

The journal adopts peer review as a fundamental quality control mechanism and may incorporate Open Science practices, including:

  • Single-blind peer review (default)

  • Optional open peer review

  • Publication of reviewer reports

The editorial process ensures transparency, traceability, and impartiality.


7. Author Identification and Contributions

In line with international best practices, the journal requires:

  • ORCID iD for all authors via ORCID

  • Declaration of individual contributions using the CRediT taxonomy

  • Disclosure of conflicts of interest


8. Ethics and Research Integrity

The journal follows the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics and requires:

  • Originality of submissions

  • Use of plagiarism detection tools

  • Transparency in research methods

Cases of misconduct may result in rejection, retraction, or institutional notification.


9. Internationalization and Indexing

The E&S Journal seeks compliance with major indexing databases, including:

  • Scopus

  • Web of Science

  • Directory of Open Access Journals

To support this, the journal promotes:

  • Publication in English or bilingual format

  • International diversity of authors and reviewers

  • Standardized bibliographic practices


10. Copyright Policy

Authors retain copyright of their work while granting the journal the right of first publication.

All content is distributed under open licenses to maximize dissemination and impact.


11. Policy Governance and Updates

This policy will be periodically reviewed to ensure alignment with:

  • Updates from SciELO

  • CAPES evaluation criteria

  • International Open Science standards


12. Author Agreement

By submitting a manuscript to the Engineering and Science (E&S) Journal, authors agree to comply fully with this Open Science Policy.
