Abstract

For a long time, interactionism was perceived as identical to the notion of symbolic interactionism. However, it can be said that it is a heterogeneous group that encompasses many strands, different schools of thought, different theoretical and methodological approaches (Jacobsen, 2019). This paper therefore aims to introduce an introductory debate on critical interactionism and its paradigmatic intersections, as well as its ontology, epistemology, view of human nature and methodological recommendations. In addition to these fundamental issues of critical interactionism, the article also advances some methodological recommendations. As a final note, the text points out that critical interactionism presents itself as a theoretical and reflexive lens that allows us to observe the multifaceted complexities of human nature at an individual, organizational, cultural and social level, offering research strategies that operate at a restricted level, while at the same time initiating socio-structural strategies.
