Abstract

There are several ways to understand the existence of linguistic data. Their relevance cannot be measured solely by their materiality, once Historical Linguistics, Philology and Etymology also recognize the reality of various non-material data as reconstructions. These data are also used by General Linguistics and by Lexicography in particular. There are constantly some philological problems related to the updating of their graphemes, which is traditionally done in order to avoid anachronism, that can confer a lack of scientificity to the linguistic data and the analyses based on it. Several situations involving the question of the existence and reality of linguistic data obtained from three works by Jerónimo Cardoso (1508-1569) are presented in this paper.
